Uttar Pradesh road trip

Delhi to Agra by Self Drive Car

The Yamuna Expressway makes Agra one of the smoothest drives out of Delhi. With your own car you can be at the Taj Mahal gates for sunrise, add Fatehpur Sikri without negotiating a taxi and be home the same night if you want.

The drive from Delhi to Agra

Route: DND Flyway and the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway to Pari Chowk, then the Yamuna Expressway past Jewar and Mathura.

From central Delhi you cross into Noida on the DND Flyway or the Mahamaya flyover and take the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway to Pari Chowk, where the Yamuna Expressway begins. It runs about 165 km to Agra with few curves, almost no cross traffic and food courts near the toll plazas. The speed limit for cars is 100 km/h, enforced by cameras, and it is lowered further during the winter fog season. The concrete surface and long straight stretches make tyre condition and driver alertness the main concerns, particularly in summer heat. Dense fog in December and January has caused serious pile-ups, so on foggy days wait until mid-morning to set off. The old NH19 via Mathura is an alternative, but it is slower and busier.

Best time to go: October to March, ideally on a clear weekday morning outside the December–January fog spell.

Things to do in Agra

  • The Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the marble changes colour and queues are shortest
  • Agra Fort, with its views of the Taj from the Musamman Burj
  • Mehtab Bagh across the Yamuna for a sunset view of the Taj
  • Itimad-ud-Daulah, the delicate marble tomb often called the Baby Taj
  • Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's red sandstone capital about 40 km west of the city
  • Petha and a breakfast of bedai and jalebi in the old city lanes

Driving tips for this route

  • The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so plan your days around it.
  • Petrol and diesel vehicles are not allowed close to the Taj Mahal. Park at a designated lot, such as the one at Shilpgram near the East Gate, and take the electric shuttle or walk.
  • Check tyre pressures before joining the expressway and take a break every hour or so; high speeds on concrete in summer heat raise the risk of tyre bursts.
  • In December and January, fog can cut visibility to a few metres. Delay your start until it lifts, use low beams and fog lamps, and never drive with hazard lights on.
  • If you take the Tata Nexon EV, charge fully before leaving and plan a top-up in Agra, as a round trip is beyond its real-world range.

Delhi to Agra self drive: FAQs

Can I do Delhi to Agra and back in a day?

Yes. Leave Delhi around 5 am, see the Taj at sunrise, cover Agra Fort and lunch, and start back by mid-afternoon to reach Delhi in the evening. Staying one night lets you add Fatehpur Sikri and Mehtab Bagh at sunset without rushing.

Which car is best for the Yamuna Expressway?

Sedans like the Maruti Dzire and Honda City are comfortable and economical at a steady 100 km/h. The Tata Nexon EV works well if you can charge in Agra, since a round trip is beyond a single charge. Whatever you drive, good tyres matter more than power on this road.

Should I take the Yamuna Expressway or NH19 to Agra?

The Yamuna Expressway is faster and has almost no cross traffic, so it is the default choice. NH19 via Faridabad, Palwal and Mathura is slower but useful if you want to stop at Mathura and Vrindavan on the way. Both have toll plazas, so keep your FASTag recharged.
