The drive from Delhi to Rishikesh

Route: Delhi–Meerut Expressway, then NH334 past Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee to Haridwar, and on to Rishikesh.

The Delhi–Meerut Expressway gets you out of the city quickly, after which NH334 is a four-lane highway through Muzaffarnagar and the sugarcane belt of western UP to Roorkee. Expect slow sections where the highway meets towns, and cane-laden tractor-trolleys between October and April. Beyond Haridwar the road to Rishikesh skirts Rajaji National Park and gets congested at weekends. In Rishikesh itself, the roads to Tapovan and the jhulas are narrow and busy, while the Badrinath highway up to Shivpuri is a proper hill road with sharp bends. Start early to clear Ghaziabad and Meerut before traffic builds, and avoid the Haridwar–Rishikesh forest stretch late at night, when elephants sometimes cross.

Best time to go: October to April for pleasant weather, with September to June good for rafting, while July and August bring monsoon rain and the Kanwar Yatra.

Stops on the way

  1. Delhi0 km

Pick up your car at home, the airport or a station. Leave early to clear city traffic.

  2. Meerut~75 km

The expressway ends here; follow the bypass signs towards Muzaffarnagar rather than entering the city.

  3. Khatauli~105 km

A cluster of big highway restaurants with parking makes this the usual breakfast or chai stop on the way to the hills.

  4. Roorkee~180 km

Home to IIT Roorkee and the Upper Ganga Canal, which crosses the Solani river on a grand old aqueduct here.

  5. Haridwar~215 km

Stop for Har Ki Pauri if you are not staying the night, though traffic near the ghats can be slow.

  6. Rishikesh~240 km

You have arrived. Park, check in and explore.

Things to do in Rishikesh

  • Evening Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan
  • White-water rafting from Shivpuri or Marine Drive, usually between September and June
  • The Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia) and its murals, at the edge of Rajaji Tiger Reserve
  • Sunrise at Kunjapuri Devi temple, about an hour's drive uphill
  • A short hike to Neer Garh waterfall off the Badrinath road
  • Cafes, yoga schools and river views around Tapovan

Driving tips for this route

  • Avoid the Kanwar Yatra in the month of Sawan, usually July to early August, when NH334 and the Haridwar area see heavy diversions and closures for private vehicles.
  • Park at designated lots near Ram Jhula or Tapovan and walk; the lanes near the ghats are too narrow for cars on busy days.
  • If you plan to continue to the Char Dham, Uttarakhand requires online yatra registration in advance, and Rishikesh is the usual starting point.
  • The road beyond Rishikesh towards Shivpuri has sharp bends and occasional rockfall in the monsoon. Use low gears on descents and avoid parking under loose slopes.
  • Leave Delhi by 6 am to clear Ghaziabad and Meerut, and plan to reach your camp or hotel before dark.
