The drive from Delhi to Lansdowne
Route: Delhi–Meerut Expressway, then Mawana, Bijnor and Najibabad to Kotdwar, and the hill road via Dugadda.
From the end of the Delhi–Meerut Expressway you head north-east through Mawana, cross the Ganga near Bijnor and continue through Najibabad to Kotdwar. This stretch through western UP is mostly two-lane, with villages, sugarcane traffic and patchy surfaces in places, so average speeds are lower than on the big highways. At Kotdwar the plains end and a winding 40 km hill road climbs through forest via Dugadda to Lansdowne. The climb is not difficult, but it has tight bends, mist in the monsoon and few places to pull over. Leave Delhi by 6 am to finish the hill section in daylight, and avoid the forest roads around Kotdwar at night.
Best time to go: March to June and October to December, when the skies are clear and the Himalayan views from Tip-n-Top are at their best.

Driving tips for this route
- Fill up in Kotdwar. Fuel options thin out on the hill road, and a trip to Tarkeshwar and back adds about 70 km.
- Lansdowne is a cantonment, so follow signs, don't stop or take photos near Army establishments, and park only in marked areas.
- The Kotdwar–Lansdowne road gets misty and slippery in the monsoon, and small slides are common; drive slowly with headlights on.
- The western UP section has slow tractors and village crossings, so budget extra time and avoid driving it after dark.
- Book accommodation with parking, as the town is small and roadside parking is limited.

Delhi to Lansdowne self drive: FAQs
Which car is best for Lansdowne?
The Tata Punch is compact enough for the cantonment's narrow roads and has good ground clearance for patchy village stretches. The Kia Seltos is more comfortable over the long plains section. If you want something rugged for forest drives like Tarkeshwar, the four-seat Mahindra Thar handles rough roads well.
How long does it take to drive to Lansdowne?
Usually 6–7 hours for about 260 km. The plains section to Kotdwar is slower than the distance suggests because of town traffic and two-lane roads, and the last 40 km takes around an hour and a half.
Is Lansdowne good in winter?
Yes, it is cold, clear and quiet from December to February, with occasional snow on the higher ridges nearby. Shaded bends can be icy in the early morning, so set out after the sun is up. Pack warm clothing, as the evenings are very cold.
