The drive from Delhi to Amritsar
Route: NH44 through Panipat, Karnal, Ambala, Ludhiana and Jalandhar.
NH44 runs the whole way as a wide, fast highway through Haryana and Punjab. Ludhiana and Jalandhar have flyovers and bypasses that save time, but local traffic still slows you at their edges. The road is long and very straight, so fatigue rather than difficulty is the real challenge; take a break every two hours and share the driving if you can. Parts of the new Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway may open in phases, but NH44 remains the dependable choice. In winter, Punjab gets some of the densest fog in north India, sometimes cutting visibility to almost nothing for hours, so from mid-December to January leave after the fog lifts and avoid night driving altogether.
Best time to go: October to March, avoiding May and June when afternoons are punishingly hot.

Driving tips for this route
- The approach to the Golden Temple is a pedestrian heritage street. Use the multi-level parking near the temple complex and walk in.
- For the Wagah ceremony, arrive about two hours early, carry photo ID and leave bags in the car, as they are often not allowed. The timing shifts with sunset through the year.
- Plan a break every two hours on the long, straight stretches, where tiredness is the main risk.
- From mid-December to January, wait for fog to lift before leaving, and pull well off the road if visibility collapses.
- A round trip with Wagah and city driving comes to roughly 1,000 km, so check the ₹8–₹16/km rate in case you go over your allowance.

Delhi to Amritsar self drive: FAQs
Which car is best for Delhi to Amritsar?
On a long highway trip, comfort matters most. The Hyundai Verna is quiet and efficient at highway speeds, while the Kia Seltos offers more room and a higher seat. Families or groups of up to seven will be most comfortable in the Toyota Innova Crysta.
Should I split the Delhi to Amritsar drive?
Most drivers do it in one day of 8–9 hours with breaks. If you are driving alone, starting late or travelling in the fog season, a night in Ludhiana or Jalandhar makes the trip much safer. Avoid driving the last stretch tired and in the dark.
How do I reach the Attari–Wagah border from Amritsar?
Drive about 30 km west towards Attari, which takes 45 minutes to an hour. There is parking a short walk from the viewing gallery. Arrive early, especially on weekends and national holidays.
