The drive from Delhi to Jaipur

Route: NH48 via Gurugram, Neemrana and Shahpura, or the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway from Sohna to Dausa and then the Agra–Jaipur highway.

You have two good options. NH48 is the classic route, six lanes through Gurugram, Manesar, Neemrana and Shahpura, entering Jaipur from the north past Amer. It has plenty of dhabas and fuel stations, but also heavy truck traffic and occasional construction slowdowns, especially around Gurugram. The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway from Sohna is access-controlled and quicker once you are on it, running through Alwar district to Dausa, where you join the Agra–Jaipur highway for the last stretch into the city. It has fewer exits, so plan fuel and food at its wayside amenities. Whichever road you take, avoid driving NH48 at night, when slow trucks and wrong-side vehicles near villages are common.

Best time to go: October to March, when days are warm and evenings are cool enough for rooftop dinners.

Stops on the way

  1. Delhi0 km

Pick up your car at home, the airport or a station. Leave early to clear city traffic.

  2. Manesar~50 km

An industrial belt with large fuel stations and food courts; weekday office hours are the slowest time to pass through.

  3. Neemrana~120 km

The 15th-century hill fort, now a heritage hotel, sits a few kilometres off the highway and makes a good detour.

  4. Behror~135 km

A long row of highway dhabas makes this the most popular lunch halt, roughly halfway to Jaipur.

  5. Shahpura~200 km

The last sizeable town before Jaipur, where the Aravalli hills start to rise on both sides of the road.

  6. Amer~265 km

The road into Jaipur passes right below Amer Fort, so you can visit it on arrival before checking in.

  7. Jaipur~280 km

You have arrived. Park, check in and explore.

Things to do in Jaipur

  • Amer Fort early in the morning, followed by Jaigarh Fort on the ridge above
  • City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, all within walking distance in the old city
  • Sunset from Nahargarh Fort, reached by a winding road with views over the city
  • Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake, best seen from the lakeside promenade at dusk
  • Block prints, jewellery and quilts in Johari and Bapu Bazaars
  • The Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri, about 90 km east on the Agra road

Driving tips for this route

  • April to June regularly crosses 40°C, so check coolant and tyre pressure before leaving and avoid driving in the afternoon heat.
  • On the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, fill up before you join; fuel and food are only available at wayside amenities, which are spaced well apart.
  • Parking near Hawa Mahal and Johari Bazaar fills quickly. Park once, then explore the walled city on foot or by auto-rickshaw.
  • The road up to Nahargarh is narrow with tight bends. Drive up well before sunset and come down slowly, as two-wheelers often take the bends wide.
  • Keep your FASTag recharged; both routes have toll plazas, and paying without FASTag costs more.

Delhi to Jaipur self drive: FAQs

Is NH48 or the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway better for Jaipur?

The expressway is usually faster and calmer, with fewer trucks weaving between lanes. NH48 suits you better if you want to stop at Neemrana or the dhabas at Behror, and it brings you in past Amer Fort. Check both on a live map before leaving, as traffic in Gurugram can tip the balance.

Which car is good for a Jaipur road trip?

A sedan like the Honda City is comfortable and fuel-efficient on both routes. If you want a higher seating position and more boot space, the Hyundai Creta is a good choice. Families of six or seven can keep costs sensible in a Maruti Ertiga.

Is Jaipur a good weekend trip by car?

Yes. Leave on Saturday morning, spend the afternoon at the City Palace and Hawa Mahal, see Amer Fort early on Sunday and drive back by evening. Three days lets you add Nahargarh, the bazaars and a stepwell without rushing.
