The drive from Delhi to Kasauli

Route: NH44 to Zirakpur, then Pinjore, Kalka and Parwanoo on the Shimla highway, turning off at Dharampur for Garkhal and Kasauli.

Follow NH44 to Zirakpur, then cut across Panchkula to Pinjore and Kalka, where the Shimla highway begins. The widened four-lane road climbs past Parwanoo to Dharampur, from where a narrower road leads to Garkhal and Kasauli. The older, steeper road from Parwanoo via Jangeshu is shorter but tighter, and best avoided if you are new to hill driving. The Chakki Mod stretch between Parwanoo and Dharampur has suffered slides in heavy monsoon rain, so check updates in July and August. Weekend visitors from Chandigarh fill the small town quickly, and cantonment rules limit where you can drive and park. Leaving Delhi by 6 am puts you in Kasauli by early afternoon.

Best time to go: March to June and September to November, when the weather is clear and pleasant for walks.

Driving tips for this route

  • Kasauli is a cantonment, so some roads are closed to visitors' vehicles and photography is restricted near military areas. Park at the public lots near the town entrance and walk.
  • Take the Dharampur–Garkhal road unless you are confident on steep, narrow bends; the Parwanoo–Jangeshu road is much tighter.
  • Traffic from Chandigarh peaks around midday on Saturdays, so arrive in the morning or come on a weekday.
  • In the monsoon, check the status of the Kalka–Shimla highway near Chakki Mod before setting out.
  • Fuel up at Parwanoo or Dharampur, as options thin out once you leave the highway.
