The drive from Delhi to Dharamshala
Route: NH44 to Chandigarh, then Kharar, Ropar, Anandpur Sahib and Una, and through the Kangra valley.
Head north on NH44 to Chandigarh, then continue via Kharar and Ropar to Kiratpur Sahib, Anandpur Sahib and Nangal, entering Himachal at Una. Some drivers prefer to stay on NH44 to Jalandhar and turn off via Hoshiarpur instead. From Una the road climbs gently through Amb into the Kangra valley; it is mostly two-lane with bends, small towns and slow stretches. The final climb from lower Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj is steep and narrow, with frequent jams on the main road up. This is a full day's drive, so leave by 5 am and plan to finish the hill section in daylight. Dharamshala is one of the wettest places in Himachal, so expect heavy rain and possible slides in July and August.
Best time to go: March to June and September to December, avoiding the heavy monsoon rains of July and August.

Driving tips for this route
- McLeod Ganj has very little parking. Stay in lower Dharamshala, Dharamkot or Naddi with hotel parking, or park in Dharamshala and take the ropeway or a taxi up.

Delhi to Dharamshala self drive: FAQs
Which car is best for Delhi to Dharamshala?
The Kia Seltos is comfortable for the long plains stretch and has enough clearance for the Kangra valley roads. A Mahindra Scorpio N suits larger groups and rougher patches in the monsoon. If you will spend time in McLeod Ganj's tight lanes, the compact Tata Punch is easier to handle and park.
Can I drive all the way up to McLeod Ganj?
Yes, but the last stretch from Dharamshala is steep, narrow and often jammed, and parking at the top is scarce. Many visitors park in lower Dharamshala and take the ropeway or a local taxi. If your hotel is in McLeod Ganj, confirm it has parking before you arrive.
Should I break the journey from Delhi to Dharamshala?
The drive takes 10–11 hours, which is a long day. If you leave after 7 am, consider a night in Chandigarh or Anandpur Sahib so you drive the hills in daylight. With an early start, experienced drivers can do it in one day.
