The drive from Delhi to Ranthambore

Route: Delhi–Mumbai Expressway from Sohna past Dausa and Lalsot, then state roads into Sawai Madhopur.

From Delhi you join the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway near Sohna and stay on it through Nuh and Alwar districts, past Dausa and towards Lalsot. The expressway is access-controlled and smooth, with far fewer trucks weaving across lanes, so the journey is quicker and calmer than the older routes via Jaipur and Tonk. Exits are far apart, and fuel and food are only available at the wayside amenities, so plan your stops. The final stretch from the expressway into Sawai Madhopur is on two-lane state roads through villages, where cattle and speed breakers slow you down. Drive this last section in daylight, as it is unlit, and stick to the camera-enforced speed limits on the expressway.

Best time to go: October to March for comfortable weather, or April to June for better tiger sightings in the heat, with core zones closed during the monsoon.
