Uttarakhand road trip
Delhi to Mussoorie by Self Drive Car
Mussoorie's best corners, like Landour, Lal Tibba and the road to Dhanaulti, are spread out along ridges that buses don't serve well. With a car you can stay somewhere quieter and drive into town only when you want to.

The drive from Delhi to Mussoorie
Route: Delhi–Meerut Expressway and NH334 to Roorkee, then Chhutmalpur and Mohand to Dehradun, and the hill road up to Mussoorie.
The first 180 km follow the familiar route to Roorkee on the Delhi–Meerut Expressway and NH334. From there you head north through Bhagwanpur and Chhutmalpur to Mohand, where the Datkali tunnel has eased the drive through the Shivalik forest into Dehradun. The 35 km climb from Dehradun to Mussoorie is well surfaced but winding, with many hairpins, and traffic piles up at weekends near the town entrance. The new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway via Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur has been opening in phases; where open it can save time, so check its status before you leave. Avoid the hill section after dark in the monsoon, when mist cuts visibility sharply.
Best time to go: March to June and September to November for clear views, with January bringing a chance of snow on the higher ridges.

Driving tips for this route
- Parking near Mall Road, at the Library and Picture Palace ends, fills quickly; book a hotel with its own parking if you can.
- On long weekends police sometimes hold or divert traffic at the town's entry points, so try to arrive before late morning.
- Landour's lanes are steep and single-lane in places, so a compact car is easier; give way to uphill traffic.
- In January, snow can fall around Lal Tibba and Dhanaulti. Carry chains if snow is forecast and avoid early morning drives on icy roads.
- In the monsoon, check conditions on the Kempty Falls road and the Dehradun climb, where small slides and thick fog are common.

Which car is best for Mussoorie?
The Tata Punch is compact enough for Landour's narrow lanes yet has good ground clearance for hill roads. The Hyundai Creta adds comfort for longer drives like Dhanaulti. For groups of six or seven, the Mahindra Scorpio N handles the climb well, though parking a larger car in town takes patience.
Is the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway open?
