The drive from Delhi to Shimla
Route: NH44 to Ambala and Zirakpur, then Pinjore, Kalka, Parwanoo and Solan on the Kalka–Shimla highway.
Most of the journey is on NH44, a wide highway through Haryana where the main hold-ups are town stretches near Panipat and Karnal and weekend crowds at Murthal. At Zirakpur you turn towards Panchkula and Pinjore, and from Kalka the climb begins on the Shimla highway, which has been widened to four lanes for most of the way to Solan and beyond. Expect slower going on the final section into Shimla, where the road narrows and merges with city traffic. The hill section is about 90 km and takes two to three hours. If you leave Delhi after 7 am on a Friday or Saturday, expect queues around Parwanoo; an early start avoids the worst of it.
Best time to go: March to June for cool, clear days, and December to February if you want snow at Kufri and Narkanda.

Things to do in Shimla
- The Ridge, Mall Road and Christ Church, best explored on foot in the evening
- Jakhu Temple on Shimla's highest point, reached by a steep walk or the ropeway
- Kufri for snow in winter and pony rides to Mahasu Peak the rest of the year
- The Viceregal Lodge, now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, with guided tours
- A short ride on the Kalka–Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage line
- Chail's palace and cricket ground, or the orchards around Narkanda and Hatu Peak
Driving tips for this route
- Mall Road and the Ridge are closed to most private vehicles, so park at one of the parking lots on Cart Road and use the public lift up to Mall Road.
- Check your hotel's parking before booking; many central hotels have none, and roadside parking on Shimla's narrow roads is restricted.
- After snowfall at Kufri and Narkanda, roads can be icy in the early morning. Carry snow chains in January and February and avoid driving after sunset, when black ice forms.
- Monsoon rain can trigger slides on the highway between Parwanoo and Solan, so check road updates and keep spare time from July to September.
- On hill roads, uphill traffic has the right of way. Use a lower gear on descents instead of riding the brakes.

How long does it take to drive from Delhi to Shimla?
Plan for 7–8 hours with breaks. The plains section to Kalka usually takes 4–5 hours and the hill section another 2–3 hours, longer at weekends. Leaving Delhi by 6 am helps you avoid queues around Parwanoo.
Can I drive on Mall Road in Shimla?
Generally no. Mall Road and the Ridge are pedestrian areas, and vehicle entry needs a special permit. Park on Cart Road and take the lift or walk up.
