The drive from Delhi to Chandigarh
Route: NH44 (GT Road) through Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra and Ambala, then the Zirakpur road.
Nearly the whole route is on NH44, the old Grand Trunk Road, now a broad six-lane highway through Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra and Ambala. Flyovers bypass most towns, but service road exits, U-turns and slow vehicles drifting into the fast lane keep you alert. After Ambala you take the road to Zirakpur, where the flyovers into Chandigarh can jam at peak hours. The drive takes four to five hours, but Sunday evening traffic heading back towards Delhi often adds an hour around Murthal and Kundli. In December and January, dense fog on NH44 is the biggest danger, so avoid starting before sunrise on foggy days and keep well back from trucks.
Best time to go: October to March for pleasant days, with February bringing the Rose Festival.

Driving tips for this route
- Chandigarh enforces traffic rules strictly, with cameras at many junctions. Stop behind the line, signal every lane change and make sure everyone wears a seatbelt.
- Start before 7 am to clear Kundli and Sonipat before the morning rush.
- If you take the Tata Nexon EV, plan one charging stop on NH44 on the way up and charge fully in Chandigarh before returning.
- Fog is common on NH44 from mid-December to January. Drive on low beams, keep a long gap and never overtake a truck you cannot see past.
- Keep your FASTag recharged; there are several toll plazas between Delhi and Zirakpur.

Delhi to Chandigarh self drive: FAQs
Which car is best for a Delhi to Chandigarh drive?
It is an easy highway drive, so a sedan like the Honda City or a hatchback like the Hyundai i20 is comfortable and economical. If you prefer electric, the Tata Nexon EV works with one planned charging stop each way. Choose an SUV only if you plan to continue to Kasauli or the hills.
Can I go to Chandigarh and back in a day?
Yes, it is about 4–5 hours each way, so a day trip works if you leave early and return at night. A two-day trip is more relaxing and lets you add Pinjore or the Morni Hills. Avoid Sunday evening returns if you can.
Is an EV practical on the Delhi–Chandigarh highway?
Yes, with some planning. The one-way distance of about 250 km is close to the Tata Nexon EV's real-world range, so a charging stop around Karnal or Ambala gives you a comfortable margin. Check charger availability in an app before you set off.
