The drive from Delhi to Manali
Route: NH44 to Chandigarh, then the Kiratpur–Manali highway via Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu.
The drive splits into three distinct parts. The first 250 km on NH44 towards Chandigarh is fast, wide highway, with the usual slowdowns around Sonipat, Panipat and Karnal. From Kiratpur Sahib, the four-lane road to Ner Chowk, with its tunnels and long bridges, has made the climb past Bilaspur much quicker than the old route. After Mandi the road follows the Beas through narrow gorges, the Aut tunnel and Kullu, and this is the slowest and most landslide-prone section, especially in the monsoon. Leave Delhi by 5 am so you reach Mandi in daylight. Avoid driving the Mandi–Manali stretch after dark, when overnight buses and trucks share the narrow road and falling rocks are harder to spot.
Best time to go: March to June for pleasant weather and October to mid-November for clear skies, with December to February for snow if you are comfortable driving in it.

Driving tips for this route
- Rohtang Pass needs an online vehicle permit from the Himachal Pradesh government, issued in limited numbers each day, and the pass is closed through winter. Apply in advance and keep a copy on your phone.
- The Atal Tunnel road via Solang is usually open when Rohtang is shut, but it closes after heavy snowfall, so check local police updates in Manali before setting out.
- From December to February, carry snow chains; after fresh snow, police often allow only 4x4 vehicles or cars fitted with chains beyond Solang.
- Fill the tank in Manali before heading to Sissu or Rohtang, as fuel stations thin out quickly once you leave town.
- Monsoon rains between July and mid-September regularly trigger landslides between Mandi and Manali. Keep a buffer day and check road status before leaving Chandigarh.
- Parking near Mall Road and in Old Manali is tight, so choose a hotel with parking and explore the town on foot.

Delhi to Manali self drive: FAQs
Which car is best for a Delhi to Manali road trip?
For winter trips with snow, a 4x4 like the Mahindra Thar gives the most confidence beyond Solang. For summer trips with family luggage, the Hyundai Creta is comfortable and easy to drive in town, while the Mahindra Scorpio N suits groups of up to seven. Whatever you choose, good ground clearance helps on broken patches after the monsoon.
Can I drive from Delhi to Manali in one day?
Yes, if you leave by 5 am you can reach Manali in 12–14 hours with breaks. If you start later, stop overnight in Mandi or Chandigarh rather than driving the river gorge after dark. Splitting the drive is also easier on first-time hill drivers.
Do I need a permit to drive to Rohtang Pass?
Yes. Private vehicles need an online permit from the Himachal Pradesh government, and daily numbers are capped, so book early in peak season. The pass usually opens in late spring and stays closed in winter. You do not need this permit to visit Solang Valley.
