The drive from Delhi to Katra

Route: NH44 through Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Pathankot and Jammu, then the Jammu–Katra road via Nagrota.

NH44 carries you almost the entire way, through Haryana and Punjab to Pathankot, then into Jammu & Kashmir at Lakhanpur and on through Kathua and Samba to Jammu. The highway is wide and fast for most of its length, with bypasses and flyovers around Ludhiana and Jalandhar. After Jammu, the road to Katra branches off past Nagrota and climbs through the foothills, busy with pilgrim buses and taxis. At 11–13 hours, the drive is best split with a night in Jalandhar, Pathankot or Jammu. Security checks at the J&K entry and around Jammu are routine, so keep your documents handy. In winter, dense fog in Punjab makes early morning and night driving dangerous.

Best time to go: March to June and September to November, avoiding peak Navratri crowds and the foggiest weeks of winter in the plains.

Things to do in Katra

  • Ardhkuwari cave temple, roughly midway along the trek

Driving tips for this route

  • Register for the yatra and collect your RFID yatra card through the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, online or at the registration counters in Katra, before starting the trek.
  • Prepaid mobile connections from other states generally do not work in J&K. Carry a postpaid SIM and download offline maps before Lakhanpur.
  • Keep your licence, RC, insurance and rental agreement handy for security checks at Lakhanpur and around Jammu.
  • Split the drive at Jalandhar, Pathankot or Jammu rather than arriving in Katra late at night.
  • In winter, start after the fog lifts in Punjab, as visibility on NH44 can drop to a few metres in the early morning.
  • Katra's roads and parking fill up during Navratri, so avoid those weeks if you want shorter queues.
