The drive from Delhi to Udaipur

Route: NH48 via Jaipur, Kishangarh, Bhilwara and Chittorgarh, with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway as an option for the first leg.

Start on NH48 or the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway as far as Jaipur. Beyond Jaipur the highway runs past Kishangarh and then south through Bhilwara and Chittorgarh to Udaipur, a wide, mostly divided road that carries heavy truck traffic, including marble and freight lorries. The landscape turns hilly after Chittorgarh as you enter the Aravallis. At 10–12 hours the trip is too long for a relaxed single day, so most travellers stop overnight in Jaipur or Chittorgarh. Avoid night driving altogether: unlit trucks, cattle on the carriageway and wrong-side vehicles near villages are common on Rajasthan highways after dark. Fuel and food are easy to find along the whole route.

Best time to go: September to March, with July and August also beautiful when the monsoon fills the lakes.

Stops on the way

  2. Jaipur~270 km

A natural overnight halt if you want to split the drive, or a lunch stop if you are pushing on.

  3. Kishangarh~375 km

Known for its marble market and miniature paintings; Ajmer and Pushkar are a 30–40 km detour from here.

  4. Bhilwara~495 km

A textile town roughly halfway between Jaipur and Udaipur, with plenty of fuel stations and highway restaurants.

  5. Chittorgarh~550 km

Give at least two to three hours to the vast hilltop fort, with its Vijay Stambh and Rani Padmini's palace.

  6. Udaipur~665 km

You have arrived. Park, check in and explore.

Things to do in Udaipur

  • The City Palace complex on the shore of Lake Pichola
  • A sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola past Jag Mandir
  • The evening folk dance show at Bagore Ki Haveli
  • Fateh Sagar Lake and the hilltop Sajjangarh (Monsoon) Palace
  • Kumbhalgarh Fort and its immense walls, about 85 km away
  • The marble Jain temple at Ranakpur, often combined with Kumbhalgarh in a day

Driving tips for this route

  • Split the drive with a night in Jaipur or Chittorgarh; it is far safer and lets you see the fort properly.
  • Do not drive after dark on the Rajasthan stretches, where cattle, unlit trucks and wrong-side traffic are common.
  • Udaipur's old city lanes around Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat are very narrow. Park at your hotel or a public lot and walk or take an auto.
  • Temperatures cross 40°C from April to June; carry water, check coolant and avoid driving at midday.
  • A round trip with day trips to Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur adds up to around 1,500 km, so compare it with the 300 km/day allowance on your booking.

Delhi to Udaipur self drive: FAQs

Which car is best for a Delhi to Udaipur road trip?

For a long highway drive, the Hyundai Verna is quiet and economical at steady speeds. The Mahindra XUV700 suits families who want an automatic, more space and a higher seat for the Aravalli stretches. Groups of six or seven will be most comfortable in a Toyota Innova Crysta.

Can I drive from Delhi to Udaipur in one day?

It is possible at 10–12 hours with breaks, but it is tiring and pushes the last stretch into the evening. A night in Jaipur or Chittorgarh is the better plan, especially with children or a single driver. It also lets you visit Chittorgarh Fort on the way.

Is the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway useful for Udaipur?

It helps on the first leg, from Sohna towards Dausa and Jaipur, where it avoids NH48's truck traffic. From Jaipur onwards you use the highway via Kishangarh, Bhilwara and Chittorgarh. Check a live map before leaving, as new expressway sections and links keep opening.
