The drive from Delhi to Mathura & Vrindavan

Route: NH19 through Faridabad, Palwal and Kosi Kalan, or the Yamuna Expressway to the Mathura interchange.

There are two good routes. NH19, the old Delhi–Agra highway, runs through Faridabad, Palwal and Kosi Kalan and is the more direct road to Vrindavan via Chhatikara, though traffic through Faridabad can be slow. The Yamuna Expressway from Greater Noida is smoother and suits those starting from south or east Delhi, with an exit for Mathura. Both take around three hours outside rush hour. Vrindavan's centre is the real bottleneck: the lanes around Banke Bihari are extremely narrow and crowded, especially at weekends, on Ekadashi and during festivals, so plan to park on the outskirts and use e-rickshaws. Winter fog affects both highways, so avoid pre-dawn starts in December and January.

Best time to go: October to March for comfortable weather, or around Holi and Janmashtami if you want the festivals and can handle the crowds.

Driving tips for this route

  • Don't drive into central Vrindavan. Park near Prem Mandir, ISKCON or your hotel and take an e-rickshaw to Banke Bihari.
  • At Krishna Janmabhoomi, phones, bags and cameras usually have to be deposited before entry, so leave non-essentials locked in the car boot.
  • During Janmashtami and Holi, police stop most private vehicles outside Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana. Check advisories and be ready for long walks.
  • Monkeys in Vrindavan snatch glasses, phones and food, so keep windows closed when parked and loose items out of sight.
  • With the Tata Nexon EV, the round trip of about 320 km is beyond a single charge in real-world use, so top up in Mathura or Vrindavan before heading back.
